What Does “Ephphatha” Mean? The Biblical Meaning Behind Be Opened

The Biblical Meaning Behind Be Opened
“Ephphatha.” Be opened.
Two words spoken by Jesus in Mark 7:34 became the inspiration behind Be Opened and a message that continues to shape everything we create.
But what does Ephphatha actually mean? And why does this moment in Scripture still carry so much meaning today?
Ephphatha comes from the Aramaic expression recorded in Mark 7:34 and means:
“Be opened.”
In Mark 7:31–37, a man who was deaf and had difficulty speaking was brought to Jesus.
Jesus took him aside, looked toward heaven, and spoke:
“Ephphatha.”
Be opened.
The man’s ears were opened, and he was able to speak clearly.
It is a short passage, but the words carry a powerful picture of who Jesus is.
He sees people personally.
He meets them where they are.
And He has the power to open what once seemed closed.
More Than a Physical Opening
The miracle in Mark 7 describes a physical healing, and that context matters. But the words Be opened also became personally meaningful to me as I reflected on my own relationship with Jesus.
What would it look like to live with a heart open to Him?
Open to His voice.
Open to His direction.
Open to receiving His love.
Open to becoming who He is calling us to be.
There are seasons when our hearts can become guarded. Life can leave us hurt, distracted, uncertain, or simply going through the motions.
Sometimes faith begins again with a willingness to open the door.
Not to religion for the sake of religion.
But to Jesus Himself.
Why I Started Be Opened
Be Opened grew from my own faith journey.
I was raised around Christianity, but there was a period of my life when faith was no longer at the center of how I lived. I never completely stopped believing in God, but my relationship with Him became distant.
Years later, after walking through difficult seasons, I found myself being drawn back toward Jesus.
Not because I suddenly had every answer.
Because I began opening my heart again.
Then I came across the words Jesus spoke in Mark 7:34:
Ephphatha. Be opened.
Those words stayed with me.
Eventually, they became the foundation for Be Opened.
Why Christian Clothing?
Christian clothing can be more than something we wear.
It can be a conversation starter.
A reminder.
An invitation.
A simple word on a shirt may cause someone to ask what it means. A cross may remind someone of Jesus during a difficult day. A Scripture reference may lead someone to open the Bible for the first time or return to it after years away.
That is the purpose behind Be Opened.
We create modern Christian apparel designed to carry meaning without losing the simplicity, quality, and style of something you genuinely want to wear.
But the clothing is never meant to be the final destination.
Jesus is.
The Meaning Behind the Be Opened Symbol
The Be Opened identity brings together two central symbols: the cross and the open door.
The cross points to Jesus—His love, sacrifice, grace, and the hope we have through Him.
The open door represents the invitation.
An invitation to seek Him.
An invitation to listen.
An invitation to let Him into the places we may have kept closed.
Together, they represent the heart behind Be Opened:
Open the door. Encounter Jesus.
Faith You Can Carry Into Everyday Life
Faith doesn’t exist only inside a church.
We carry it into our workplaces, gyms, coffee shops, relationships, struggles, celebrations, and ordinary moments.
That idea influences how we approach Christian apparel.
Our pieces are intentionally modern and wearable because we want faith-centered clothing to feel natural in everyday life.
You don’t have to shout to carry a meaningful message.
Sometimes one word is enough:
Ephphatha.
Clothing With a Greater Purpose
Be Opened was created to point toward Jesus, but our faith should also influence how we love and serve people.
That’s why giving back is part of our mission.
5% of every purchase is committed to supporting organizations that empower and uplift women in need.
We believe faith should move beyond what we say and into how we love others.
Our hope is that as Be Opened grows, its ability to give, serve, and support others grows with it.
An Invitation to Be Opened
Maybe you’ve followed Jesus for your entire life.
Maybe you’re rediscovering your faith.
Maybe you’re searching.
Maybe you’re simply curious.
Wherever you are, the message remains remarkably simple:
Be opened.
Open to hearing Him.
Open to knowing Him.
Open to where He may lead you.
Because Be Opened was never created simply to put Christianity on clothing.
It was created as an invitation.
More than clothing. An invitation.
